The Art of Conferences

Conferences are more than forums for networking and exchanging the latest data. They are stages on which to celebrate accomplishment and discovery, places to be moved and inspired through stories, and occasions to see the world through new eyes. We’d like to share with you some of the most interesting and accessible presentations and people that we have come across in our work. Enjoy!
Poster Perfect
Conference venues can have less than ideal setups for viewing a poster. Whether it’s a hot, congested room filled with people or one that is spacious but contains many hundreds of competing posters, your poster has to pop in any setting. Read up on making your poster stand out.

The Geological Society of America
Geologic processes have sculpted this planet for more than 4.5 billion years. Geologists are witnesses to planetary change and history, and many of them record their observations with compelling images. The 2010 Geological Society of America Photo Exhibition was juried by a panel consisting of a nationally known nature photographer, a geologist, and an artist. Viewing the American Photo Exhibition Gallery will make you aspire to be a geologist!

National Council of Teachers of Mathematics
Bathsheba Grossman describes the emergence of a geometrical artist and the development, themes, and techniques of the speaker’s sculpture, in context with the vital, growing field of mathematical art. Now as never before in history, mathematical education at all levels can lead toward a lifetime of aesthetic appreciation and discovery. See her 2011 Annual Meeting Webcast on nctm.org

Entomological Society of America
Christopher Marley makes us crawl out from our avoidance of insects into seeing their beauty and form. In his recorded presentation at Entomology 2010, ESA’s 58th Annual Meeting in San Diego, he tells how he grew into his artistic vocation and discovered a passion for insects.
